Grinding your teeth while you sleep (nocturnal bruxism) is a common problem. A problem that left untreated can cause a lot of damage to the dentition, its supporting structures (the gums and alveolar bone), the muscles of mastication and the temporomandibular joints (TMJ’s). A nightguard, worn over the teeth (usually on the upper teeth) can prevent the damaging effects of bruxism.
A Thermoguard ® is such an appliance. It is made out of a thermoplastic material which is hard at body temperature but will soften up a little for easier insertion and will easily adapt to small changes in the teeth, for instance if you should have a crown or filling done. This saves you from having to replace or reline the guard every time you have dental work done. This sets it apart from conventional hard acrylic nightguards.
